Hashimoto's Diet: Keys to Success. Hashimoto’s is the most common autoimmune disease in the United States. It is a thyroid disorder and an autoimmune disease. Arsenic, mercury levels higher with a gluten-free diet. With the aim of investigating the link between gluten-free diets and toxic metal exposure, Argos and team. O ne glance at our web site and you will surely notice we are different than other gluten free food websites you will find online. You see.our story began one day. The autoimmune part of the equation makes virtually everything a challenge and this is particularly true when it comes to trying to figure out what to eat. One of the absolute truths about Hashimoto’s is that no 2 people have the same version of the disease. There are too many variables, people are at different stages of progression, and they have other autoimmune, endocrine, digestive or systemic problems.
So, generalizing about what kind of diet is the best is kind of like asking, “Where do I build my house on this minefield?”Where Do I Build My House On This Minefield? You build it where it won’t set off the mines. Some people estimate that 7. Whatever the actual percentage, there is no doubt that what goes through your digestive system has a huge impact on your immune system. Huge. This concept is just common sense, but many doctors and health care practitioners ignore it. One doctor friend of mine put it to me this way. He said, “I don’t bother trying to change people’s diets. It’s easier to get an alcoholic to stop drinking than to get people to change the way they eat.”People are attached to food. It has cultural, emotional and psychological roots that run deep. However, if you have Hashimoto’s and you want to learn to manage it properly, you need to abandon all of that. It will not serve you. Leaky Gut: Adding Gasoline to the Fire. Many people with Hashimoto’s also have intestinal permeability, also known as leaky gut. A healthy GI tract is one that one has a lush forrest of villi, all held tightly together. This keeps the bad guys, like bacteria, chemicals, environmental toxins and undigested food out of the blood stream. Unfortunately, chronic inflammation turns this lush forrest into a desert and poor diet, blood sugar imbalances and chronic stress open up wide chasms that a molecular 1. Many people believe that this actually sets the stage for the onset of autoimmune disease when the immune system shorts circuits and starts confusing other stuff with our own tissue. The one food that is most often implicated in this is gluten. Fix the Gut, You Slow the Hashimoto’s. Many people also believe that the best way to heal autoimmune disease is by healing the gut. Eventually, you can add them back in one at a time (hopefully). When you do you will begin to discover your own unique set of land mines. And instead of rummaging around in the dark there are now also diagnostic tests available to help determine which foods cause an autoimmune response in you (More on this in a moment). This can save you a lot of trial and error and can help you identify the really bad ones. Most of The Foods That Cause the Most Damage Are the Ones You Love. The foods that tend to be the worst are those that you, invariably, love the most. Like ice cream, cheese, bread, and pasta. And there is a biological reason for this. Both foods made from gluten and milk have proteins that are very similar in structure to morphine. They are called casomorphin in milk and gluteomorphin or gliadorphin in wheat products. Now wonder we love them, we’re freakin’ addicted to them! Different Camps of Autoimmune Diets. There are a few different camps out there for autoimmune disease diets. Most of them involve elimination and provocation. In other words, you take foods out and put foods back. The biggest differences seem to be which foods you put back. Once again, the reality is that some people can put some foods back and others can’t. Remember, your Hashimoto’s is not your brother’s or sister’s Hashimoto’s. You have to find your own way. There are some foods that some people will have to eliminate from their diets forever. FOREVER. And this is the real challenge. Because some people will suffer more from cheating than others. But, even if you feel like the damage wasn’t so bad and you can live with it, it may be destroying valuable tissue like your brain or something that you might want to use later in life. Cheating can have serious and, sometimes, silent consequences, like the destruction of important tissue. Here’s a quick overview of the most popular diets currently being used. Paleo Auto. Immune Diet. The Paleo diet or Paleolithic diet, also called the Cave man diet or Hunter- Gatherer diet, is one in which you are told to eat like our nomadic ancestors. Centered around common modern foods, this diet consists mainly of fish, grass- fed pasture raised meats, eggs, vegetables, fruit, fungi, roots, and nuts, and excludes grains, legumes, dairy products, potatoes, refined salt, refined sugar, and processed oils. Critics argue that this diet is essentially just the Atkins diet with a few updates, but it has a loyal following. And if you really ate like our Paleolithic brethren, that is, you hunted around the African plains with a spear and a few rocks, you would eat a diet that was largely plant based with a few lucky days of meat binging thrown in. And you would spend a lot of time running and doing old school cross fit maneuvers as you escaped hungry lions and hyenas. Definitely a formula for good health – if you didn’t get eaten. The autoimmune version of this diet removes grains, eggs, beans, legumes, dairy, soy, refined sugar and salt, all processed oils and nut based oils, and night shades (tomatoes, eggplants, peppers and potatoes) and, sometimes, nuts. Its really restrictive, but can be quite effective. The real issue seems to be – can you come up with a diet plan that isn’t basically all meat all the time? And you definitely can. You need to make a conscious effort to have plenty of fruit and vegetables. Some people with Hashimoto’s do very well on this diet and it can dramatically improve the health of your gut on its own. Add some supplements that heal the intestines, as well, and you could have a winning formula. It is, essentially a gluten and, in some cases, grain free vegan diet. No meat, no dairy, no eggs, no animals, and no fish. And in some cases, no grains or beans. Critics of this diet argue that you don’t get enough amino acids from plants alone and many Hashimoto’s folks are also iron, B1. Vitamin D deficient and its hard to virtually impossible to effectively keep those levels up without animal products or supplementation. It also takes a lot of things, pardon the pun, off the table. So it doesn’t leave you a lot left to eat. But this diet also has its loyal fans and can be very effective in reducing the inflammation that drives the autoimmune process and destruction of the gut. If supplements are added here, and you eat enough, you can also have a winning formula with this approach. Blood Typing Might Help Determine Which Is For You. Some people think that one way to figure out which version of the autoimmune diet is best for you might be to use blood typing. Those with blood types that need meat (Type O) might do better on Paleo, those who are not big meat eaters (Type A) may do better with the Vegan version. The remaining blood types (B and AB) might need some hybrid of the two. Which ever you chose it is vitally important to eat as much variety as you can within all these restrictions and to supplement with iron, Vitamin B1. Vitamin D as it becomes necessary. Whatever You Choose, Lectins Are Out. All of these autoimmune diets remove lectins. Lectins are nature’s answer to insects long before Monsanto began its evil march towards domination of our food supply. They are, basically, natural pesticides that live in plants to help them survive the ravages of fungi, bacteria and viruses. They are kind of like natural toxins. Lectins are carb binding proteins that protect plants and have other functions like protein synthesis and delivery in animals. They’re pretty sticky molecules, which makes them cause problems in our intestines because they get stuck there and start eating away at the walls. It is believed that lectins leave leaky gut in their wake, in a trail of savaged villi. Once they have wrought their carnage, they breach the walls of the intestines and leak into the bloodstream with lots of other unwanted particles. And the immune system goes nuts trying to deal with it all. Foods with the highest amounts of lectins are: grains of all kinds (wheat being the worst), legumes (soy being the worst), nightshades (mentioned earlier), and oils made from seeds. GMO foods also have lots of lectins because they are used in genetic modification to enhance pest and fungal resistance. Further Complications. Salt: Recent studies have indicated that that high salt levels may push the initiation of autoimmunity by driving the TH- 1. Basically, its an on switch. Problem. Lots of Hashimoto’s people have low blood pressure and desperately need salt. Iodine can also be bad for some Hashimoto’s people. Answer: Moderate salt without iodine (unless you are iodine deficient – there’s always a caveat). Sugar Issues: Many Hashimoto’s people have blood sugar issues and if their blood sugar goes too high or too low it can really impede their progress. Some of these diets are so restrictive that people’s blood sugars end up dropping and spiking and they wind up defeating the very program that they are on. Answer: Find the foods you like, eat them often. Start the day with a protein. Don’t ever skip meals. Anemia: Many Hashimoto’s patients develop anemia for a host of reasons. This can completely undermine any dietary changes you are trying to make. Test for iron deficiency and red blood cell counts and make sure you are supplementing with iron if necessary (especially if you are choosing the vegan route). Vitamin C can also enhance iron absorption. Cross Reactors: These are foods that have a similar protein structure to gluten and our own tissue. Like gluten, they may have to permanently avoided because they drive the autoimmune attack and disease progression. Learn About Benefits, Plans and Recipes. The Secret to Overcoming PCOS: The Ultimate PCOS Diet. Most women treat PCOS with medication. Usually they do so with birth control pills or with blood sugar regulating meds. However, neither of these options ever solve PCOS. Drugs may cover up symptoms of PCOS in the short- term, but they are completely ineffective for long- term healing. But there is one secret key to effective change. Conclusions. The low-carbohydrate diet produced a greater weight loss (absolute difference, approximately 4 percent) than did the conventional diet for the first six. 8 simple PCOS diet rules will get you on your way to healing your worst symptoms. It is a PCOS diet. Here’s why, how, and what to do about it. The PCOS Diet: Why. PCOS (read my introductory post “what is PCOS” here) stands for poly cystic ovarian syndrome. It is the condition of having multiple small cysts on the ovaries. It is usually accompanied by elevated male sex hormone levels and irregular menstrual cycles. Markers of PCOS include acne, oily skin, facial hair, balding, difficulty losing weight, low libido, and missed menstrual cycles and infertility. Not every woman who suffers from PCOS has all of these symptoms, but all have at least a few. These symptoms are not a result of the cysts on the ovaries themselves. Rather, they are a result of a hormone imbalance in which male hormones are elevated over female hormones. When doctors proscribe medication for PCOS, they typically have two options: One is birth control pills. These pills contain progesterone and (usually) estrogen in them. These pills help control the symptoms of PCOS because they increase progesterone and estrogen levels in the blood. Doing so helps restore proper balance between male and sex hormones. The problem with taking these pills is that the underlying hormone imbalance continues to exist. Once you come off of the pill, the chances are close to certain that your PCOS symptoms will come back. Another is blood sugar regulation. The primary pill used for this is metformin, which I have written about at length here. Metformin sometimes helps (though not always, not all PCOS cases are the same). Even in cases in which it does help, however, it does not heal the underlying problem. The important thing to know about PCOS is that it is caused by an underlying health condition. If you take medications that cover up symptoms, you are still left with the underlying health problem. In many cases of PCOS (though not all) this is an insulin problem, and may also be a gut problem, or a thyroid problem. All of these problems can cause many other symptoms and diseases in the long- run. In fact it is almost certainly guaranteed to. The only way to be free of all of these health problems is to make the dietary changes necessary to correct hormone imbalance and heal underlying health conditions. The PCOS diet: How. I wrote an extensive post about the causes of PCOS here (and an even more extensive book about it here). For a real quick recap, this is what I said: PCOS is far more complicated than most medical professionals and websites would have us believe. They tell us that PCOS is only a problem of high testosterone and insulin levels. But PCOS is caused by so many more things! PCOS is a common problem among teen girls and young women. In fact, almost 1 out of 10 women has PCOS. What is PCOS? Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormone. There is no one size fits all definition of PCOS, and there is no one size fits all diet. Part of being a PCOS Diva is listening to your body and the cues it sends you. It is also caused by hypothyroidism, by leaky gut, by birth control pill usage, by inflammation. I will mention below which specific aspects of the diet are more helpful for different underlying conditions – though all of the points of advice are helpful to know about. The more you know about your PCOS and what has caused it, the better. That way you can better tailor your diet and healing plan to your needs. I wrote a manual exactly on how to figure out your PCOS that you can read about here. You can also check out this post on PCOS treatment options. The PCOS Diet: Foods to Eliminate or Limit. What is polycystic ovary syndrome? Polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS) is a hormonal disorder defined by a group of signs and symptoms. These may include. From a physical standpoint, it may be best to completely eliminate the following foods from your diet. However, I recognize that this is not necessarily feasible, especially if you have an ambivalent relationship with food and think that an overly- restrictive diet will do you more harm in the long- run. Restriction, after all, is the primary cause of overeating. So I advise you to consider these guidelines as firm guidelines you choose.
Choose to focus on the healthy foods and to avoid the less healthy foods. Don’t force or punish yourself. Make it a choice – and it will be all the easier to adhere. You may choose (for any number of reasons) to deviate from the guidelines from time to time. Just know also that it’s best to focus on the healthy foods as much as possible. Processed foods. Perhaps it goes without saying, but this is so important I will say it anyway: Foods that come in colorful bags and boxes have most likely been “manufactured” to some extent, and contain any number of unhealthy compounds. Trans fats and partially hydrogenated oils may be some of the worst, though all the added sugar in processed foods gives them a run for their money. Foods that you wouldn’t even expect to be bad are often full of things that aren’t good for you. Breakfast cereals, for example, are usually fortified with folic acid. This was intended to be helpful for pregnant women – but it now instead has been linked to several forms of cancer. If you instead eat one serving of spinach every day, you would get your daily requirement for folate which is far healthier for you than the chemical altnerative folic acid made in laboratories. Take a look at the ingredients in whole wheat bread. In addition to being full of gluten and other harmful wheat proteins, for most brands, there is a high amount of sugar and even partially hydrogenated soybean oil in the bread. Processed foods cause PCOS because they cause nutrient deficiencies and inflammation. They mess up metabolism and make it hard for the body to healthfully detox and metabolize food. Removing them from the diet can do wonders for women with PCOS. Sugar. I am a perfectly good fan of fruit, potatoes, starches, and other natural plant carbohydrates. Sugar, on the other hand, in sweets, in soda, in sauces, and in just about everything else from restaurants or packages in grocery stores, is incredibly bad for women with PCOS. Sugar causes insulin levels to spike, and insulin causes the ovaries to produce testosterone. Therefore many women find that there is a direct relationship between how much sugar they eat and how bad their PCOS symptoms are at any given point in time. Sugar is not the only thing that can cause insulin levels to go haywire. Having inflammation or IBS or other gut problem can also cause dysregulated insulin levels. But sugar is most definitely one big potential bad guy that should be eliminated (as much as possible). Seed oils. What’s a seed oil? A seed oil is probably the oil 9. Seed oils are used in processed foods and by restaurants because they are cheap nd don’t have a unique flavor, which makes them easy to use in any food product. Seed oils include vegetable oil, soybean oil, canola oil, rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, and all other oils that come from seeds or nuts. They are unhealthy because they are composed primarily of omega 6 fats, which cause inflammation. Inflammation is one of the primary causes of insulin problems, hormone imbalance, and PCOS. Avoid them by avoiding processed foods, and by cooking with coconut oil (my favorite here), olive oil (another favorite here), or ghee (clarified butter) at home. Grains. Unlike most bloggers in the paleosphere, I don’t think it’s necessary for everybody to give up grain products 1. However – if you have a gut issue, an insulin issue, or most especially an autoimmune disease like Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis like many women with PCOS do have, you probably do need to eliminate grains at least for a while. And even for those of us who do not have any of those conditions, grains are still not optimal. The proteins in grains (gluten is one but not the only one) can be harmful to the gut lining. Certain molecules in grains bind with nutrients in the gut and carry them out of the body with excretion. They should not be the staple of anyone’s diet. Consider eliminating grains for at least a few weeks and see if that helps you! Some women I have worked with have found that eliminating grains was the most important thing they did for their healing. Grain- type things that are okay in my book are rice, quinoa, and occasionally corn and oats (though be sure they are gluten free). Dairy. Dairy is complicated. Some women need to remove it for PCOS and others do not. This is another food, like grains, that I recommend experimenting with. Remove all dairy – milk, yogurt, cheese, cream, and butter (though ghee is fine since it is clarified!) – for at least 3 weeks and monitor if you experience any changes in your symptoms. Some women need to eliminate dairy because of its harmful effects on the gut. Others find that doing so helps with symptoms of PCOS like acne because dairy is simply a food that has a lot of male- type hormones in it. If you have an autoimmune disease or IBS. Your best bet as a guide in doing so is Dr Sarah Ballantyne, who’s written the book on autoimmunity and diet. You can find the book here. The PCOS Diet: Foods to focus on. That may seem like a lot of food to eliminate! No processed foods, no oils, no sugar. All of them. They are rich in B vitamins, vitamin E, vitamin C, and many other antioxidants. Try to have at least one serving of greens like kale, spinach, chard, or broccoli every day. More often than not, cook the greens, as this reduces a potential threat they might pose to your thyroid gland. Starchy vegetables. Starchy vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, cassava and taro are great choices for meeting your carbohydrate needs (which I consider to be at least 1. Women who struggle with insulin and who are type I PCOS may not want to have a TON of starch, but they should still have at least some carbohydrate – at least 1. Women who are type II PCOS and struggle with low hormone levels may instead want to have a LOT of carobhydrate, somewhere around 2 or even 3. Fruit. Fruit is also awesome! Fruit is also full of antioxidants and vitamins. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome & Fertility. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome may be one of the most complex female health issues of our time. It is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. PCOS is accompanied by a variety of different health issues, many of which directly impact fertility. Classic PCOS presents with obesity, polycystic ovaries (multiple ovarian cysts that look like a strand of pearls), elevated levels of androgens and absent or irregular menstrual cycles. Not all women who will go on to be diagnosed with PCOS will have these issues though. What Causes PCOS? Doctors are unsure of what causes PCOS, but information suggests there are several links including genes, possible abnormal fetal development, insulin resistance and inflammatory response contributing to the cause. The researchers also found one region of susceptibility in the DNA of Chinese women. Of particular interest was one area of DNA that contains the gene for the hormone FSH (follicle stimulating hormone). This finding provides evidence of disruption of the pathway that regulates FSH and in turn ovarian function which plays a crucial role in the development of PCOS. The human genome project has allowed researchers to pool more than 7. DNA of thousands of women with PCOS. This is what helped them identify regions of genes associated with PCOS.“For a number of years, researchers had been thinking that it was testosterone produced by the ovary that was a major problem in PCOS, but our study did not find signals for genes regulating testosterone. This suggests that FSH, in either how it acts on the ovary or how it is secreted, is very important in the development of PCOS. This is a new way of thinking about the biology of PCOS.”– Dr. Andrea Dunaif. Researchers are planning on mining the DNA of women of African ancestry with PCOS next to see if there is a shared genetic basis for PCOS over other ethnicities. Doctors plan to use all of this research to identify girls who may be at- risk for developing PCOS and create a medical treatment protocol to cure it. Another interesting study of 2. PCOS sought to discover if there is a link to the development of PCOS later life that may be influenced by factors beginning in the womb. The women were divided into two groups. Insulin Resistance. Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas and is responsible for signaling cells in the body to function correctly, most importantly to convert glucose to energy and to control their growth. It also plays a key role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. Insulin resistance happens when the body’s cells become resistant to the effects of insulin. When this happens, higher levels of insulin are needed so that insulin can have the proper effects. At this point, the pancreas must overcompensate, working harder and harder to produce more insulin. Insulin signals the ovaries to secrete testosterone and inhibit hepatic sex- hormone binding globulin (SHBG) production which leads to an increased level of circulating testosterone. This is why many women with PCOS experience acne, facial hair growth and male pattern baldness (hirsutism). Excess insulin in the bloodstream also signals the ovaries to release more estrogen which can suppress ovulation. Low- grade Inflammation. It has also been found that women with PCOS have low- grade inflammation, which may be a cause for insulin resistance. Melissa Goist, Ob. Gyn. This led to certain criteria that must be recognized to be diagnosed with PCOS, rather than just the presence of polycystic ovaries. As the follicles begin maturing they release and increase the hormone estrogen over time. The rising estrogen level signals the pituitary gland to curb the release of FSH. During a woman’s reproductive years, estrone levels are relatively low. Typically we associate estrone with menopause, not the the fertile years of a woman’s life. Endocrine function is imbalanced from the very beginning of the menstrual cycle causing mild to severe hormonal imbalance, depending on the individual. Excessive levels of estrogen may also cause uterine hypertrophy, also known as endometrial hyperplasia. Unopposed estrogen may cause excessive cell proliferation of the endometrium. The endometrium is the innermost layer of the uterus that is shed as menses during menstruation. This is done with the intent to stimulate ovulation. Insulin Resistance. Metformin. This drug is commonly prescribed for women with PCOS, even if they are not insulin resistant or have any signs of type 2 diabetes. Before choosing to use this medication, talk to your doctor about the long- term goal and duration of treatment. There are a variety of other medications prescribed depending on the symptoms of PCOS. There are medications for hirsutism or alopecia, weight gain and more. Resistance to insulin increases the body’s insulin levels which can have a negative affect on ovulation by limiting the maturation process of an egg and in turn delaying or preventing ovulation from taking place. Fortunately, there are many natural options you can do on your own to turn this all around. The biggest step you can take is to change your diet to a PCOS diet. The benefits of following a PCOS Diet are: Increases the rate of spontaneous ovulation. Significantly improves the environment of the uterus, preparing it for implantation. Increases the likelihood of a healthy conception. Decreases the potential for miscarriage. Helps to prevent insulin resistance from turning into diabetes. PCOS Diet Guidelines. Balance your daily protein intake with an equal amount of carbohydrates. This will help to eliminate the insulin yo- yo. When you eat equal amounts of protein and carbohydrates this helps to keep your insulin at a balanced level, thus increasing your fertility. A low- carbohydrate, high- protein diet helped insulin resistance. A high- carbohydrate, low- protein diet made insulin resistance worse.– Medical Journal Metabolism; no. A diet containing 2. International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders; 2. The types of carbohydrates you choose are also an important factor. Choose whole grain, or sprouted grain products. They contain more protein and fiber (better for balancing insulin levels) than their processed counterparts. Avoid processed carbohydrates, especially the white variety (white flour, rice, potato, etc.) which cause a spike in insulin levels and provide little to no fiber, or nutrients. Some examples of whole grain and sprouted grain products are: Ezekiel breads. Spelt. Quinoa. Millet. Brown Rice. Buckwheat. Amaranth. The best place to find these foods are at your local health foods store or Whole Foods Market. Make sure the proteins you are eating are complete and organic. Organic meats and dairy contain essential fatty acids and will reduce the negative impact on hormonal imbalance. Eat foods low on the glycemic index and glycemic load list. Blood glucose rises and then falls when you eat a meal containing carbs. How high it rises and how long it remains high depends on the kind of carbs (glycemic index, GI) and the amount you ate (glycemic load, GL). Low glycemic index foods are carbohydrates that break down slowly in the body, and don’t cause such a dramatic spike and then drop in insulin levels. The glycemic load takes into consideration the amount of the glycemic index food you consumed and how that affects your blood sugar. The glycemic load combines both the quality and quantity of carbohydrate into one . It’s the best way to predict blood glucose values of different types and amounts of food. The serving size of the amount of carbohydrates consumed really matter here. Be sure to eat no more than 1. PCOS and are overweight. Increase the amount of low glycemic index carbohydrates consumed a day to over 1. Some examples of low glycemic index foods are: Kale, broccoli, asparagus. Beans and lentils. Grapefruit and apples. Walnuts and almonds. Processed carbohydrates that break down quickly make insulin levels jump dramatically. Avoid foods that have a high glycemic index such as sugary and starchy foods such as: pancakes, syrups, sugar, white potatoes, jams, scones, white bread products, pasta, soda, alcoholic beverages. Click here to learn how to make low GI fertility smoothies friendly for PCOS. Eat a diet high in fiber. Fiber helps in two ways with PCOS. The first way it helps is by slowing down the digestion of sugars in the body, so there is no spike in insulin. The second way fiber helps is by promoting healthy estrogen metabolism which aids in the reduction of elevated levels of androgens. Great sources of fiber are: broccoli, celery, whole grains, Ezekiel bread, apples, and dark leafy greens. Eat 5 meals a day. By eating more often, the body will not go into fasting mode. When you look at the way most Americans eat, it is usually three big meals a day. With such a large gap of time between meals the body goes into fasting mode which may cause the metabolism to become imbalanced. Your five meals a day should consist of three regular meals and two healthy snacks, or 5 small meals. The first snack should be eaten in the mid- morning before lunch and the second snack to be eaten less than an hour before bed. At each meal a day be sure you are eating a serving of protein (3- 4 ounces), a low GI/GL carbohydrate (1/4- 1/2 cup or serving size), and vegetables (1 – 1 & 1/2 cup). Here is what the 5 meals a day could look like: Breakfast (right away, when you wake up): 2 eggs scrambled in 1 tsp. Find out what works best with your lifestyle. Eat essential fatty acids daily. Eating essential fatty acids (EFA’s) helps you to lose weight, aids hormonal balance, and are important building blocks for the body to create a healthy environment for conception. The best source of omega- 3 EFA’s is Cod Liver Oil, and omega- 6 EFA’s is Evening Primrose oil. Cod Liver Oil– Take 1 capsule daily with one of your meals. Cod Liver Oil is a rich source of DHA which is essential for a developing baby’s brain health. High- Protein Low- Calorie Diet Plan . When dietary guidelines for protein and caloric intake are adhered to, nutrient- rich protein sources are chosen, and health issues are taken into consideration this type of diet plan can result in a healthy lifestyle for people who strive to lose weight and stay well. Protein is a nutrient that serves a critical role in the body. It is used to make up the structure of cells and functions as enzymes, transporters and hormones. The Institute of Medicine states that the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) of protein is about 0. Therefore, necessary levels of protein vary for each individual and are based on body weight. In recent years, high- protein diets have gained popularity for their potential to promote weight loss. One study published in a 2. Findings also indicated that the increased intake of a high quality protein at breakfast may be important for weight loss on a high- protein diet. Fruits and vegetables are an important part of a high- protein diet. Photo Credit Tay Jnr/Digital Vision/Getty Images. Most high- protein diets result in a reduction in total caloric intake when lean sources of protein are chosen. This is because, when one switches from eating high- calorie and high- sugar processed foods to leaner protein sources, fewer calories are consumed and more nutrients are gained. When these lean protein sources are combined with fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains, the result is a healthy diet that promotes weight loss. A study published in a 2. This means choosing lean protein sources which also provide other sources of nutrients such as heart- healthy fatty acids and fiber. Some examples of these choices include grilled fatty fish such as salmon, as well as beans and lentils. Also, some grains such as quinoa offer a variety of essential amino acids. In addition to choosing quality protein for this type of diet, the level of calories should be monitored as well. The National Institutes of Health recommend that a healthy caloric intake for weight loss should not be below 1,2. For healthy people, high- protein diets are typically safe for short- term use. Photo Credit Digital Vision./Digital Vision/Getty Images. High- protein diets might be safe for healthy adults, they could be dangerous for people with liver or kidney disease. Waste products generated during the metabolism of the added protein can be especially taxing to individuals with these conditions. For healthy people, high- protein diets are typically safe for short- term use. Long- term use, however, might limit the intake of other nutritionally beneficial foods. High- protein diets are often associated with improved athletic performance. Photo Credit Jupiterimages/liquidlibrary/Getty Images. High- protein diets are often associated with improved athletic performance causing many athletes to turn to supplements for extra protein. The American College of Sports Medicine does support the protein intake of 1. DRI of 0. 8 grams per kilogram. The organization, however, also states that this amount can most often be met through diet without the need for protein or amino acid supplements. Omelet Salad. Insoluble fiber remains undigested as it passes through your system. Both types of fiber slow down the process of digestion, and helps you feel fuller for longer (1). Back To TOC2. Reduce The Intake Of Carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are a staple in the diet of many. In fact, of all the food groups, the amount of carbs consumed is the highest. This poses a problem because every gram of carbohydrate contains four calories. And most foods that are rich in carbs barely possess any other nutrients. How Is It Helpful? So it is important to register what you are eating, and keep track. You can cut back on a lot of calories just by avoiding foods that don’t fill you up (3 ). Back To TOC6. Choose Better Snacks. Image: Shutterstock. Three meals a day can leave you feeling hungry in between. And that’s where most of us slip up. Even if we try eating meals that are healthy, we end up binging on snacks that are anything but. And this has a huge impact on our weight, so we should opt for better snack options. How Is It Helpful? The biggest culprit that causes weight gain is our habit of unhealthy snacking. Fries and chips and cookies do nothing to fill us up, but add a lot of carbs, sugar, and fat. Back To TOC1. 1. Don’t Give Up. Image: Shutterstock. There are times when temptation gets the better out of us, and we end up binging on junk. Or we go to a party and end up eating way more than what we had planned. There will always be instances where we fall off the wagon. And it can seem all too easy to give up on the whole notion of losing weight. But even if you slip once or twice (or a hundred times), go back to sticking to your diet. How Is It Helpful? Experts agree that going off your diet is bound to happen. But they also agree that you should go back to it if you want to keep off the weight that you had lost in the first place (5 ). Back To TOCA Diet Plan. A low calorie diet doesn’t have to be the ordeal it is made out to be. If you stick to three meals and two snacks a day, you ought to stay full. There are plenty of recipes that you can try for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that not just aid in weight loss, but are delicious to boot. Breakfast. There are those who consider breakfast to be the most important meal of the day, and preach that it is something that should never be skipped. The logic was that if you missed breakfast, you would be hungrier at lunch, and you might even indulge in pre- lunch snacking. But recent research shows that how much you eat at lunch does not really depend on whether or not you’ve had breakfast. But skipping meals is never a good idea, because it brings with it a plethora of health issues. So, when weight loss is on your mind, you can go for good old oatmeal or try out a high fiber, super- healthy smoothie. Mixed Berries Smoothie. Ingredients Needed. How To Make. From its inception, our Kawasaki Vulcan 2. In the first, we'd take a competent motorcycle and make it better. In the second, we would hand off our newly gussied- up cruiser to a customizer to show us all how real builders do things. STAGE IThere's a funny thing about plans. While they always look carefully thought- out on the calendar, they rarely take into account the challenges encountered along the way. As any customizer (from the home- garage type to the grizzled pro) will tell you, the real story behind a custom bike is what happens while you're struggling to meet the demands of your schedule. Of course, trying to modify a relatively new- model bike for which aftermarket companies are still developing accessories will further complicate things. Our list of absolutely necessary changes was short and. Weight loss was the major theme, with performance upgrades to complement the trim- down. While we like fat- look cruisers as much as anyone, we felt that, contrary to what the popular song may say, too much of everything may well be too much. So we began thinking fit and trim. Off with Its Head(light)! The first parts to come under our collective gaze were those associated with the headlight. Now, we're not saying the headlight isn't pretty. Still, we knew it set the tone for the Kawasaki Vulcan 2. So after an hour or so of concerted wrenching, a mound of chrome sat on the garage floor and our V2. K was 1. 1 pounds lighter. In the warm afterglow of a successful first step, we chose to ignore the challenges we'd just created for ourselves. First, our V2. K no longer had a headlight and was, therefore, no longer street legal. Second, Kawasaki never intended for us to see the triple clamps, handlebar risers or the assorted wires and cables hidden under the headlight nacelle. Prior to this moment of understanding, we'd blithely thought we'd get the triple clamp chromed. Well, guess again, bucko.
Quite simply, the triple clamp's casting was one of the ugliest things we'd ever seen. And rightfully so. Why would an OEM waste any money beautifying parts that were meant to be out of sight? So while we already knew we would be ordering a new headlight, a set of aftermarket triple clamps was added to the list. Only we couldn't find it anywhere. Apparently, we were a bit ahead of the curve, at the leading (or bleeding) edge on this little modification. Pipe Down, Power Up. The next obvious place to remove excess poundage was the exhaust system. We looked around and found a svelte system in Cobra's catalog. The Speedster Shorts had the slim look we wanted, and the folks at Cobra said we'd be more than happy with the performance increase. Regular Motorcycle Cruiser readers are familiar with our aversion to overly loud pipes, so we were happy when the friendly Cobra representative said the pipes wouldn't offend our delicate sensibilities. A few days passed and a box arrived in our garage. The stock system, all 3. We immediately mounted the Cobra system. MSN Health and Fitness has fitness, nutrition and medical information for men and women that will help you get active, eat right and improve your overall wellbeing. Wish You Were Here is a music studio album recording by PINK FLOYD (Psychedelic/Space Rock/Progressive Rock) released in 1975 on cd, lp / vinyl and/or cassette. Now the V2. K was another 1. That same afternoon we also installed a Baron Custom Accessories Big Air Kit ($2. Dynojet Research Power Commander fuel- injection- adjustment unit ($3. As many experienced engine massagers have discovered, you can find bigger power gains by opening up a cruiser motorcycle's intake side than you get when you change the exhaust system. It also costs less and makes far less racket than the switch to a loud exhaust system. The Baron Custom Accessories Big Air Kit offered an impressive increase in breathing capacity and also looked much less bulky and provided a better view of the big Vulcan 2. The Power Commander permitted us to adjust the Vulcan 2. Dynojet's Power Commander simply plugs inline with the stock Kawasaki ECU with original- style connectors. This fuel- injection- adjustment unit smoothes out the bike's mixture through the rpm range in stock form. However, to optimize the ECU's maps for our set up, we took the bike to L & L Motorsports, one of hundreds of dealers trained and authorized by Dynojet to tweak the adustments of the Power Commander and the one that Dynojet recommended in our area. You can find one in your area at www. EFI. When the airbox and extraneous hoses were removed and the new parts added on, the V2. K was about a pound heavier. OK, as with any diet, we hit a momentary plateau. But we kept patting ourselves on the back because the bike was still 2. V2. K below 8. 00 pounds. Held Up by Suspenders. While we were in diet mode, we also set out to improve some of the V2. K's systems. First and most importantly, we addressed the rear suspension. We called two of our favorite suspension companies to see what they had. Works Performance said it hadn't had access to a Vulcan 2. Our call to Progressive Suspension revealed that, not only did it have a shock, it'd be happy to ship one out the next day. We called Works Performance to say thanks, but, you know, deadlines and all. Works was very pleasant about the whole thing. Time passed. No shock arrived. A phone call revealed that parts of the shock were expected in the next day or so. After another couple of weeks passed, we contacted Progressive Suspension to find out where the shock was. The company was being held hostage by parts that still hadn't arrived and couldn't build the shock until it got them. So, faced with looming deadlines, we contacted Works Performance and asked.. You'd think that after all these years in the motorcycle business we'd have acquired a taste for crow, but we still have to choke it down. Fortunately, Works Performance was more than willing. After leaving the V2. K with the company for a couple of weeks, we had the first off- the- assembly- line shock for the V2. K. Unfortunately, we weren't able to test it since the V2. K was being packed away for the next stage.)Fending for Ourselves? While we were waiting on the shock, we had other side projects going. We were trying to find some stylish fiberglass fenders to replace the heavy steel ones gracing the V2. K. Yes, we know metal is the be- all, end- all of cruisers, but we were on a weight- loss mission. The only problem was that we hadn't found a set of fiberglass fenders we could fall in love with. So we kept looking. Right about this time we were contacted by Stephen Garrett Design about the collection of Vulcan 2. Two of them just happened to be fiberglass fenders and (hooray) billet triple clamps! The fenders give the big Vulcan a decidedly sporty look. The triple clamps are machined from solid billet and rake the front five degrees& #1. As soon as we saw pictures of the triple clamps, we ordered a set without predrilled holes for a headlight mount. We began looking for voodoo dolls around the office to explain this rash of out- of- everyone's- control delays. On a more positive note, we ordered and installed a set of Goodridge braided steel brake lines ($1. While the stock Kawasaki brakes were quite good, the new lines delivered even better feel at the lever, allowing remarkably quick stops from our still- beefy Vulcan. Readers should note, however, that the front lines took the more sportbike- like approach by bringing two lines up to the master cylinder rather than splitting them at the bottom of the triple clamp. While this makes bleeding the lines a breeze, cruisers who want a minimalist look at the master cylinder (particularly those who go to the trouble of running all the wiring through the handlebar) will want to custom- build their lines (Goodridge offers all the parts you need) to keep the clutter to a minimum. The Works Performance shock dramatically improved the V2. K's ride. By swapping out the approximately 9. The developer said his philosophy was to soften the spring for smoother initial travel and use high- speed damping to prevent bottoming. Also, by better pairing the rebound damping with the compression, the Works shock doesn't kick back over harsh freeway bumps as the stocker did. The shock has an 1. The Works shock also has about 5. The shock is available in stock length or 1. If we were impressed by the V2. K's ride improvement, we were amazed by the power output of the combined Baron Big Air Kit, Cobra Speedster Shorts and Power Commander. Although peak horsepower isn't the most important part of this modification, these are the numbers people always look at first. In stock trim, the V2. K put out 9. 3. 4 horsepower and 1. After having a custom fuel map created by L& L; Motorsports, the numbers jumped to 1. While that might be nice, the numbers at partial throttle make the biggest impression from the saddle. At every throttle position above 2. For example, at 4. V2. K makes almost eight more ponies. What this means out on the street is that simply rolling on the throttle gives you much better response than before. You don't need to run the engine out to the rev limit to benefit from the upgrades! However, when you do choose to wind out the engine, the combination of the intake honk, exhaust note and power increase is intoxicating. These first chnages had made our Vulcan 2. The suspension is what we wish it had been out of the box. The brakes offer much better feel for hauling the still- heavy machine down from speed. The engine itself is simply too much fun. However, the V2. K clearly needed a visual overhaul. Wires were hanging out in the breeze by the triple clamp, which is pretty darn ugly in its own right. It was time to pack this puppy up and ship it to a Texas fat farm for further weight reduction and a little cosmetic surgery. STAGE II: MAJOR TRANSFORMATIONThe expression is one we've seen from builders before& #1. This time, however, the debut is a little more private, as builder Stephen Garrett rolls the finished Vulcan 2. Project (by now, simply . Garrett and his wife have just driven 1. Texas to Los Angeles, only stopping for occasional naps when they were both too tired to drive. Before that, Garrett had been up for the better part of three days making the final touches to the V2.
